Yochk'o Seffer
Chromophonies
Jean-Pierre Zirn
2004 - 52 min - Betacam SP - Couleur - France

Yochko's Sheffer 65 years old is going to record his 65th record in the Home of Radio (Paris). He is one of the most touching French jazz personage. Musician with Hungarian origins, he became famous by playing with mythical French bands of the seventies ( Magma, Zao, Neffesh Music...) and continues to be a free jazz saxophonist with small or big orchestras. Composer, musician, painter and carver, using four means of expressiveness, he creates some weird sonorous sculptures that take part to strange improvisations. We find him in some warm musical exchanges with his old friends, Christian Vander for drums, Didier Lockwood for violin, Alain Bouhey for clarinet, François Cohen aka Faton for piano and his daughter Deborah, who evoke with their own words their friendship and work with him and draw a nice portrait. And to end up the backstage of a recording where jazz is married to a classical music chamber orchestra, the "String Orchestra": his last work dedicated to John's Coltrane memory.
