Japanese Sandman
François Nouguiès
2014 - 52 min - HD - Couleur et Noir & blanc - France

"The Japanese Sandman" is a documentary film about a dance marathon staged at the French MAC/VAL museum during the year 2011. This event was inspired by Horace McCoy`s novel "They Shot Horses, don`t they?" and the type of dance marathons popular within the Great Depression of the 1930s.
In this contemporary reading willingness to play replaces endurance for a prize constituted not of a handful of dollars, but of the opportunity to become the main character of the movie. "The Japanese Sandman" is Monsieur Loyal leading the marathon and the movie towards an open end using manipulation, thus creating a controversial set of impressions both among the characters and the viewers.
Close to a reality show this experience is a criticism of the entertainment society.
