In the rain forest, trees and ants coexist in an unlikely, symbiotic frienship. Researchers are now convinced that each could not in fact survive without the other. The ants protect the trees against their many enemies, such as leafeating insects and suffocation lichens. In exchange for their cleaning and protection services, the trees provide the ants with shelter and food in the form of sap.
