"We’re more popular than Jesus." John Lennon’s statement caused an uproar, but it was just another episode in the story of the tumultuous relations between rock’n’roll and religions.
That story started with Elvis’s ungodly hip swing and is still going strong today with the revival of Christian rock music. This sixty-year story features deified singers, gurus, hippies, metal fans, punks, fundamentalist preachers and superstars who died much too young.
