A tribute to Roger van de Wouwer is long overdue, "the least complacent painter to the eye, who gave us so many durables surprises," and his work should be recognised as one of the most interesting of the second half of the 20th century. The activities of his friends and colleagues during the inspiring period of surrealism in Belgium also deserves the public’s attention.
