Une fenêtre à Tanger
Le Maroc de Matisse
Yves de Peretti
1999 - 26 min - DV Cam - Couleur - France

On January 27th, 1912, Henri Matisse boarded a ship for Morocco. He spent two successive winters in Tangiers, seven months in all. He brought back some twenty paintings, which include several of his masterpieces.
"A window in Tangiers" traces a turning point in the artist’s work by closely examining this key period in his career. Narrated with Matisse’s own words, the film shows a selection of canvasses, which pinpoint the artist’s creative endeavours during his stay in North Africa.
Matisse was the first to synthesise western art and eastern decorative art, in which the part is linked to the whole, and the fragment refers to the ensemble, like a ceramic tile or a piece of fabric. By rediscovering this link, lost since the Renaissance, Matisse opened up vast, new perspectives for art.
