La Poudre et la Feuille
Une histoire de la coca Série-Collection : Des plantes et des hommes : une histoire des médicaments

Sylvain Roumette
1994 - 26 min - Betacam SP - Couleur - France

Native to South America, the history of coca has its roots in the Pre-Colombian America. The leaves of coca, used from the beginning of time by the natives to take away the sensations of thirst, hunger, cold and fatigue, arrived in Europe at the end of the 18th century where they were rapidly developed, beginning with the isolation of cocaïne.
The history of the coca leaf then develops, like most vegetable drugs in two parallels directions : the creation of some galenic classical forms on the one hand such as the famous coca-cola, and the medical use of cocaïne as a local anaesthetic on the other, which use was going to cause, after opium and morphine, another wave of drug addiction.
