"When I grow up, I shall marry Daddy". "When I grow up, I shall marry Mummy"... Around the age of three, a child shows an inordinate love for the parent of the opposite sex, trying to seduce him/her and take the place of his/her father or mother.
At the Oedipian period, the most fundamental and decisive experiences are situated on the affective and relational level. The Oedipian situation will play a decisive role in the psycho-affective evolution of the child and in his opening to the world.
The fact that it is impossible to marry the parent of the opposite sex, a cruel disappointment for the child, will lead to his detaching himself from his mother, recognising him/herself as a future man or future woman, accepting the law of the prohibition of incest and the law in general, as well as acquiring a moral conscience. This is also the period of "me", of sexual differentiation.
