From 1917 to 1924, Anne Morgan, daughter of a billionaire New-Yorker, moved to France along with 350 American women volunteers and set up the American Committee for Devastated France, known principally by its French acronym CARD. The aim of the organization was to bring relief to the French civilians who had endured four years of living in atrocious conditions close to the Western Front.
The scope of the CARD’s action and the new humanitarian methods it put in place were of such significance that they greatly advanced women’s rights in postwar France.
Letters, archive photos and films from the period combine with personal accounts to provide a fascinating insight into this incredible yet little-known episode of history.
