The film documents the rehearsals and the concert of Pierre Boulez’s grand composition Pli selon pli, Portrait de Mallarmé for solo soprano and orchestra. Encounters with Pierre Boulez provide insides on the piece. Each of the five movements is based on a Mallarmé poem, "So, fold by fold, as the five movements develop, a portrait of Mallarmé is revealed," says Boulez. His longest work, on which he worked for over 30 years, also reveals a portrait of Boulez himself, his ideas about music and poetry.
