That year, I returned to Pico Island in the Azores. I wanted to meet the writer, poet and whale hunter, José Dias de Melo, in his native village, Calheta de Nesquim. I wanted to spend a few days by his side, listen to him telling some of the stories that have marked his life, accompany him on his walks and discover the landscapes he describes in his books. But when I arrived I learned that he had fallen ill and was in hospital at São Miguel, another island of the archipelago. Nobody could tell me when he would be back. So I decided to wait... I took with me one of his last books Poeira do Caminho. I peruse it to pass the time. And if I listen, I hear his voice...
