A staged student documentary made to illustrate a poem. Wajda’s nocturnal account of the factory workers, machinists and stokers who work while the rest of Poland sleeps looks like an aesthetically competent government-commissioned film, aimed at convincing citizens that their society is running on well-oiled rails.
