Commissioned by the Roosevelt administration for didactic purposes, this film presents the work carried out in the Mississippi basin during the New Deal: dams and dikes designed to put an end to the ravages of floods and deforestation in the Southern States hard-hit by the Great Depression. The River blends a score by Virgil Thomson, variations based on folk songs, with a commentary by Pare Lorentz, a text highlighting the Native sounds of the toponyms of Native Amerindian origin in a poetry lauded by James Joyce.
