This experiment in realism focuses on the importance of coal mining to British industry and the economic hardship and physical dangers faced by the miners. Cavalcanti was first hired by Grierson for the GPO Film Unit to advise on the use of sound; this film has a particularly innovative soundtrack, while its kinetic energy owes much to the work of Eisenstein and Vertov.
