Disappointed by his experience as an FAO official, Daniel Knoop quits a well-paid job to set up his own business in the Congo. He believes the country could supply food to the whole of Africa, if they could only encourage farmers to break out of the subsistence economy by allowing the free market to function properly. The film starts at the end: the farmers who were producing manioc for Knoop explain how he had disappeared without warning. They wonder whether or not he exploited them to make money.
