Au fil du son
Un portrait de Yann Paranthoën
Pilar Arcila
2007 - 54 min - DV Cam & Super 8 m - Couleur - France

A man assembles sounds and leaves us to guess the images. He is neither a sound effects engineer, nor an archivist, nor a composer but probably all of them at once. Describing Yann Paranthoën’s activity calls for several inseparable terms, he is a radiophonic director of an audible reality transfigured into fiction. He says he is as wary of the notion of documentary as of that of music.
Pilar Arcila records images concerning this sound carver, the son of a Breton stone carver, born in Ile Grande in 1935 and who died in 2005. There is a certain intimacy in the voice of this master of the tape recorder reproducing the accents and dialect of people he met. Around this are the images of the film, like those contained in the magnetic tapes transmitting a memory, the reality of which can from now on only be ours.
