Au contact de la forêt et de la savane

Received wisdom about the dynamic of plant formation in sub-Saharan Africa paints a picture of a rapid shrinking of forest cover, which is giving way to savannah.
Recent studies in Cameroon as part of the Ecofit programme show on the contrary that the rainforest is encroaching on the savannah. This trend, which no doubt dates back more than 2,000 years, has been aided for several decades by the introduction of an invasive plant, Chromolaena odorata, which prepares the ground, so to speak, for the forest's encroachment on the savannah.
Botanical studies, and samples from wet sub-soil, have confirmed this trend, which is widespread throughout the Cameroon forest belt.
