Calls to join the Resistance were favourably received in Ardèche which is by tradition a land of revolt. The 200 or so Resistance fighters at the beginning were formidably efficient : they carried out many acts of guerilla warfare and sabotage and set up innumerable maquis in the wild landscape. The German response to this insubordination was the cruel deeds to which they were accustomed : torture, execution, deportation.
The insurrection set up after 6 June 1944 – Normandy landing – with the help of more than 6,000 new arrivals, allowed practically the whole of Ardèche to set itself free before the arrival of the first French army, which a great number of Ardéchois then joined until the final victory.
