For thirty years people have been saying that the La Mure coalmine in the Isère will have to close. For nearly thirty years successive governments have been giving economic reasons to justify this decision. And yet, 300 miners still today go on extracting coal and refuse the closing of the mine, the social plan and retraining.
"A question of hope" calls back one moment of the mine's history, that between 1991 and 1994, and lets the people who have written the story speak : from the director who is concerned with the future career of the minors, to his successor who is to set up a recovery plan...
From the Trades Union representatives who have continually to work out new forms of protest in relation to new political decisions, to the prime minister on an election campaign who confirms what he promised...
From the minor who refused redeployment in 1991 and who buys a business in 1993, to the one who wanted to leave his job and who is still working at the mine today...
