Les États généraux du film documentaire 2011 Sacem Day

Sacem Day

  • Friday 26 August - 10:00 am - Room 1 - Leçons particulières de musique

Devised by François Manceaux and Olivier Bernager, the twelve film collection "Une Leçon particulière de musique avec…" has become a milestone in musical documentary since it was broadcast by La Sept-Arte between 1987 and 1991. The idea was to capture the living art of essential musicians, during concerts but also as they transmit their knowledge and experience to young interpreters, many of whom have become the masters of today. Yvonne Loriod (whose students include Nicolas Angelich, Roger Muraro), René Jacobs, Anner Bylsma, Pierre-Yves Artaud (and his courses to Emmanuel Pahud), José Van Dam, Kenneth Gilbert, Nikita Magaloff (with Philippe Cassard among the young interpreters), Marek Janowski, Gérard Poulet (and Renaud Capuçon, among the students), Yuri Bashmet, Scott Ross or Hermann Baumann contributed to this series filmed by directors sharing deep empathy with music such as Michel Follin, Roger Kahane, Jacques Renard or Jean-François Jung… Excerpts of films commented by Jean-François Jung, François Manceaux and Olivier Bernager will throw light on the choices made during the development of this ambitious collection with no real heritage visible in the audiovisual scene of today.

    Friday 26 August - 2:30 pm - Room 1 - Captations de musique vivante

How can we apprehend a concert or musical show, transcribe a musical score, capture the emotions aroused by a work, the expressions of the interpreters while recording or recreating a musical event for the camera... These are the questions facing any director in the very specific field of filming music at a time when, aside from on-line transmissions where the economics of production is particularly fragile, traditional television remains too cautious to propose real programmes aimed at the curious and amateurs of musical discovery. The panel will try to identify the way directors, via their cameras, are able to pick up what is expressed by music. Olivier Meston and Stéphane Kowalczyk, an indissoluble duo, will discuss their approach to the composers they follow, from the writing and first performance of a work to filming the musicians' rehearsals. Franck Cassenti and Jean-François Jung will share their experience by showing how the camera must be accepted in the live-action of musical creation, linking the notions of recording music to the conception of documentary films. Olivier Bernager's approach allows us to see how a musicologist can help a director appreciate exactly the moments to record. Finally Alexandre Perrier, but also François Manceaux, will speak of their experience as producers trying to develop projects by giving them the best possible exposure in existing media but also by seizing the opportunities opening up in multi-format transmission.
