Digital screenwriting

  • Monday 23 August - 10:00 am - Room 2 - Les Trois Écritures

Meeting with Clarisse Herrenschmidt, author of Les Trois Écritures, Langue, nombre, code1 exposant. Specialist in the languages, religions and civilisations of Iran before Islam, but also of ancient Greece, Clarisse Herrenschmidt recounts the history of writing of Western Humanity since the Sumerian calculation bubbles from Sumer (Iraq) and Suse (Iran) to the Internet via the Middle and Near East, classical Greece and Europe. She will present a synthesis of her work, comparing three systems of writing, and situating them in the context in which they emerged. 1 Les Trois Ecritures : Langue, nombre, code, Bibliothèque des Sciences Humaines, éd. Gallimard, 2007.

    Monday 23 August - 2:30 pm - Room 2 - Expérimenter avec le web

Since its inception, the Internet has been a medium of the real. And hypertext remains the starting point for any thinking. And even if the blue underlined link has transformed over the years to take on many complex and mobile forms, fundamentally it is still the same story. Hypertext is an extraordinary invention for any narrator. Since 2002, how have we analysed these new forms of writing? Is making stories non-linear a sufficient condition? How can we think of forms of narrative which contain within themselves genes of the Internet? Participation, real time, relation between the surfer and the programme, sharing, multimedia distribution but also data bases, technology, rupture in production methods and periods of exploitation. The creative territory is immense. For several years, my company Upian.com has been committed to exploring this new genre. From La Cité des Mortes to Prison Valley, including Thanatorama and Gaza Sderot, we have produced, coproduced and participated in a number of web documentary projects. This workshop will give us the opportunity to discuss and study good and bad ideas. A return on practices, experiences and trials with interactivity. To move forward. Alexandre Brachet

    Tuesday 24 August - 10:00 am - Room 2 - Prison Valley

A story to begin with. One Saturday when Prison Valley had been on line for a month, a violent argument broke out on the web documentary forums between certain inhabitants of Cañon City, the "city prison" we had chosen to examine, and us. It was at this point that one of the characters of our film, a prison guard of Supermax, the Alcatraz of the Rockies, intervened. On his own behalf. To defend our work and our right to... right to observe. Encouraged by our tiredness, the transatlantic ping-pong was unending. One of us broke down and cried. It was possible, it had worked! Spectators could henceforth dialogue directly with the participants of a film, within the film itself. This new dialogue was one of the directions we tried to open in Prison Valley, a hybrid documentary at the crossroads of three experiences: photo-journalism (Philippe Brault), documentary (David Dufresne) and web development (Upian production). From the start, we were not sure of everything we were going to set up (linear narrative coupled with forks, borrowing certain narrative codes from video games, interactivity, tchats, forums, integration of social networks, etc.), except for one thing: we had to explore, research, test. Some mechanisms worked well, others much less so. Debates emerged: how does the space and time offered by the Internet modify the work of authors-directors? What is from now on our relationship with the real, with the possible multiplicity of screens and writing styles? And above all, how do web documentary projects transform our relationship with the real? David Dufresne and Philippe Brault

    Tuesday 24 August - 2:30 pm - Room 2 - Regard sur le web

Together, we will discover projects that are under development or that have already been put on line, and we will share with the audience their own experiences as Internet user or as film director.
