"In the retirement home he now lives in, in Karlsruhe, Mr Berner reads out loud excerpts of Heiner Müller's play The Road of Tanks. The text deals with a Russian commander in World War II. I tape record as Mr Berner evokes his own military service. He contemplates his life before and after the war, his present loneliness. Müller's text echoes his words. His memories of war in Nazi Germany had such a strong impact on me. Trying to get an idea of Mr Berner through his story, I know it will remain incomplete. I tried to develop a picture of him despite the remaining gaps." (Serpil Turhan)
