In Niamey, Niger, over seven days the Horendi takes place, during which the "horse spirits" (possession dancers) are recruited in the courtyard of the holding of priest Zima Sambo. Two young sick women, permanently possessed for some weeks, are initiated to the possession dance. The gourd-drummers play all the themes of the spirits and sing their slogans while the young women learn the ritual dance whereby trance is provoked and mastered. On the seventh day, the "horses" receive their ritual clothing, corresponding to the spirits which have possessed them and they dance before the entire assembly.
