During the Winter War and the Continuation War almost eighty thousand children were sent away from Finland to safe countries. Most of the children were taken to Sweden, but Denmark and Norway also accepted a few thousand refugees. Being separated from their parents and brought to a new country was very difficult to the children, of whom a majority knew no other languages than Finnish. Some of them stayed in their foster families for only a few months, some for many years.
