Tant qu'il y aura de la danse
( Portrait de Thony Maskot )

Bruno Maruani
1999 - 58 min - Digital vidéo - Couleur - France

Thony Maskot is a hip-hop dancer and choreographer. This pioneer, far removed from academic circles, defends his passion and transmits his art to younger people.
This film is a discovery of this character who has had an unusual background. At 14 this semi-professional footballer in search of his identity decided to leave his housing development. He spent time with the "Black Panthers" then had an apprenticeship with the precursors of the hip-hop movement until he decided to make it his profession.
His words and his body take us on a journey into the heart of urban dancing. From pedagogy to creation, from collective and theatrical choreography to the magic of the stage, Thony shares with us his work, his humility and his inner strength.
After the "La Cigale" show with his company, the "Sanrancune", in February 1998, the film follows Thony and his group from the inside. They prepare and rehearse their next show for the Rencontres des cultures urbaines in La Villette in October 1998, a great annual meeting for hip-hop in France.
