This is the story of a green valley in Switzerland. Its inhabitants were as happy as anyone can expect to be in Switzerland. At the beginning of the year 2006, a battle that will last 37 days begins with the occupation of the local factory. It finds the managers and workers united, with the unanimous support of the entire population, the churches, the political parties and the trade unions.
The aim of the top management of the Swissmetal group, which owns the factory, is to transfer production abroad. This exceptionally bitter struggle raises a number of questions. What use is the union, the UNIA? What is the role of Switzerland’s democratic institutions, and their strength?
