L'Appel du Kanaga
Catherine Michelet
1995 - 56 min - Hi 8 - Couleur - France

1993, Catherine Michelet is 26 years old. She goes off alone to Algeria, Mali and Senegal. Her dream is to find the trace that her great-great grand-father, Eugene Menu, left in local memories. Her guide : the 600 page manuscript written by her ancestor a century ago.
Thanks to it, Catherine travels over the high Algerian plateaux on board the engine of a goods train, she crosses the Sahara with a humanitarian aid convoy, criss-crosses the desert on camel-back, shares in the daily life of nomads and Touareg rebels, ventures in to Dogon country.
For nine months Catherine Michelet relives the extraordinary story her family has dreamed about for four generations. "The Call of Kanaga" is the coming-together of two unusual adventures. It is also a persistent quest and a plunge into the Africa of yesterday and of today.
