"Parajanov pays little attention to the storyline and the drama. To meet his ambition, a film should be like a craftsman's object, with multiple facets reflecting the customs, the daily rites, the conscious and unconscious mind of a people: in this case the Goutzouls of the Carpathian Mountains." The film plays with a cosmic dimension. Objects, nature, the characters are imbued with the irrational, symbol, rite and drama. Parajanov's camera has the curiosity and daring of a human being with the need to touch, to arouse the heart in order to test its limits.
