This is the story of the genesis of a musical piece, the Quartet for the End of Time by Olivier Messiaen. It was composed and interpreted during the Second World War in a prisoner camp. It is the story of how a creation was born: one composer, three interpreters and instruments in very bad shape, all used as a means to challenge imprisonment, war, cold, starvation, time, and chiefly, the impossible. It is the first film that explores Messiaen’s major work.
