The life and work of the mondine in the rice plains between Lombardy and the Piedmont. The film is narrated by the words of the workers themselves, mostly seasonal migrant women from Veneto, Lombardy and Southern Italy, and is punctuated by their folk songs. The day begins on rising at five in the morning and ends late in the evening, after work in the water covered fields. On Sunday, following a few moments relaxation in the dormitory, the women go to the ball.
