1998 - 88 min - 35 mm - Couleur et Noir & Blanc - Belgique, Mongolie
This is the story of Baasar, a stray dog killed in the beginning of the spring in Ulan Bator. Forced to learn how to survive in the Mongolian capital after being abandoned by his masters who moved to the city, he remembers his life as a sheep dog. This is the story of a dog who doesn't want to become human in spite of the Mongolian belief in the reincarnation of dogs as human beings.
"State of dogs" convinces the spectator that it is truly anchored in the present by weaving together the multiple narrative strands of the sociopolitical, mythological, ethnographic and poetic elements of present-day Mongolia. The Belgian, Peter Brosens, and the Mongolian, Dorjkhandyn Turmunkh, offer a spectacle which combines different levels of reality within a truly fascinating syncretic vision.
