Felipe Martinez is a former pit worker. He was born in the north of France in 1916 of Spanish parents. At the age of 20 he joined the International Brigades to defend the Spanish Republic which was threatened by the rise of fascism. Returning to France after the Republican defeat, he went back to his family. War broke out, he went into the resistance. He was denounced, taken as a political hostage then deported to the Mauthausen camp. He owes his survival to the solidarity of his fellow captives who were former members of the International Brigades or the Spanish Republican Army.
In all circumstances Felipe has known how to walk with his head held high.
