A brilliant and subversive engraver and illustrator, a prolific draughtsman, painter of portraits, nudes, mythological scenes and landscapes, Félix Vallotton (1865-1925) was a man of many talents, and changed from one period to the next. He was also a man of letters who wrote art reviews, essays, plays and novels.
Rebelliously anarchistic and solidly bourgeois, a member of the Nabis group and an unrepentant loner, comical and depressive, Vallotton defies categorization. To better understand the complexity of the man and his work, the film invites the spectator on a kind of treasure hunt in which two clues emerge: his distance from the world and his obsession with water.
