Roland Baumann is a teacher at the Widemann school in Saint-Louis, Alsace and he is a character. However, that is not what first attracted me to him. It was what his former pupils said, his "children" as he likes to call them.
The national education authorities expressed some reservations that came from the inspector's department. Baumann gets bad assessments. However, with the children, things go well. So why not slip into this intimate, particular classroom world ? I paid a visit to Baumann's colleagues, took a little walk through other classes, to pick up here and there that passionate energy developed by all the teachers.
With Baumann there are events that he likes to organise like flying over the Alps in a plane, his class having a ball in the aircraft belonging to a private Swiss company, or like the Wednesday outing with "taxi-parents" to experience a day of grape-harvesting. These are little but real moments of happiness for the children.
