Between 1964 and 1973, more than half a million air raids were conducted over Laos, a country the size of Great Britain. Years later, hundreds of thousands of unexploded bombs lie buried in the ground, waiting for their victims.
Less publicised than personal mines, this leftover ammunition is an issue with which Laos has been desperately struggling for years with little result and amidst a deafening international indifference.
To live, Laotian peasants have to be ready to die. They are left weeding their fields aware that a bomb might blow up in their face at any time. A month does not pass without one of their children being killed or crippled by this deadly trash.
"Deadly Trash" is the agonising account of an ignored plague afflicting a little known country. It shows how an entire population can live with dignity and courage under a constant and treacherous threat. It also unveils the desperate fight of the few foreigners who have decided to help.
