Roger Codou, the grandson of a communard, was born at the turn of the 20th century. He joined the French Communist Party in 1924 and the following year protested as a conscientious objector against the colonial wars. In 1937, he joined the International Brigades. Later, he would refer to the war years at the sides of the Spanish Republicans as the best years of his life. Despite these affectionate terms he never ceased to denounce the political trials and summary executions that haunted the Brigades. He left the PCF in 1956. He was in Budapest that year.
