Zwischen 3 und 7 Uhr morgens
Klaus Wildenhahn
1964 - 9 min - 16 mm - Noir & Blanc - Allemagne

A poor neighborhood in Hamburg, St. Pauli is a place known for prostitution, as well as for its links with the music scene (the Beatles lived there, among others). Shooting "between three in the night and seven in the morning", Klaus Wildenhahn films the shady side of a modern city, the opposite of modernism from the twenties, with the "symphonies of big cities".
Because the sound framework is so rich, the film is an experimental work in which additional sound mix is nothing but mere emotional rhythm. This is a brilliant audio-visual study about the loneliness of human beings and the frailty of their dreams; then day breaks again, the sun shines and the music changes. People are still sleeping on the subway, but they’re on their way to work…
