Mauritius, Sunday 21 February 1999, Kaya, a famous singer has just died while in police custody. Riots break out all over the island. A democratic country, often quoted as an example, is struck by a "social cyclone" of an absolutely exceptional violence. A second autopsy, published on 10 March, reveals that Kaya was the victim of police brutality.
The revolt inflames the towns and popular districts where Kaya, a rasta singer, precursor of a style, Seggae, was the voice of protest on behalf of the young people of every origin but especially the black Creoles.
This new music, a mix of Reggae and Sega, traditional Mauritian music, bears strong ideas : cross-breeding, fusion, non-violence.
