Portraits of a Woman Gone
Frédéric Goldbronn
2013 - 95 min - XDCAM - Couleur - France

The woman who has disappeared is the director’s own mother, a figure he conjures through memories of his three sisters and one brother, all older, born of four different fathers and who did not grow up together. Those memories, both overflowing and empty (or overflowing with emptiness), are compared with the artifacts their mother left behind – letters and captionless, sometimes torn photographs.
The places she knew are revisited, from Paris’ upscale 16th arrondissement to the working class suburb of Aubervilliers, with a detour past Saint-Germain des-Prés. Official records inquiries reveal her secret – the painful tale of her youth during the Occupation.
Little by little, these fragments all come together as the cohesive whole of one life which, by its very messiness, makes a unique statement about the liberty of a twentieth-century woman.
