500,000 citizens from the northern half of the EU have bought second homes in other parts of the EU. Half of them are German. Erling is a Swedish estate agent who has sold more than 500 homes in the southern town of Emmaboda to Germans in the last 20 years. He clients dream of the good life and a retirement home. They are popular with the locals who appreciate German tidiness, good manners and interest in their culture and language.
In Portugal, Angela, a German, buys and sells old farmhouses in the Alantejo region of Portugal to fellow Germans. Portuguese vendors would rather not sell, with the depopulation of the countryside, there is little choice if they want to move into more confrotable premises. On such person is Delphina who lives for a time in a part of the house with the new German owners. Unlike their Swedish counterparts Delphina's family feel like second class and impoverished citizens whose land is being bought cheaply by rich Europeans from the north.
