At the Serra Pelada mines deep in Amazonia, over 100,000 garimpeiros have extracted 100 tonnes of gold with their bare hands. This gold rush began in the late 1970s and lasted more than 30 years. Based on prospectors’ testimonials, the film exposes their dreams of striking it rich and the nightmare of working like slaves.
It also looks at the role of Sebastien Curio, the governor of this lawless zone, who negotiated rights for his illegal prospectors with the government.
