Sainkho Namtchylak Série-Collection : Freedom Now

Guy Girard
2004 - 45 min - DV Cam - Couleur - France

Sainkho is an exceptional singer from the desert of Tuva, a small country lying on the border of Mongolia and Siberia. She has created a style combining the traditions of her nomadic past, folklore, guttural singing and shamanism with influences in the current world of drum n’bass, hip-hop, and contemporary jazz.
In 1997, Sainkho fell victim to a violent stroke leaving her in a coma for several weeks. The gravity of this event led her to believe for some time that she was being punished for her extremist musical endeavors. This horrible situation must also have echoed Tuva’s belief that guttural singing is dangerous for a woman’s health. They are forbidden from doing it, it is taboo. In all senses of the word, Sainkho is a lady who has come back from afar.
She expects a miracle to happen at each concert.
That night, Sainkho plays With William Parker (bass) and Hamid Drake (drums) for the first time.
