Franz Weintraub (né West), a prominent Austrian communist and journalist (1909-1982), remembers the First Republic. He tells about his childhood. He was born in Magdeburg but moved to a Jewish neighbourhood, the Leopolstadt, i.e. the second district of Vienna in 1924. He speaks about his leaving traditional Judaism for the working class movement, about the political struggles in the twenties and thirties, which he experienced. His very personal report, which covers the years from 1924 to 1934, is illustrated with contemporary photographs, film clips and documents.
