Panman
Trinidad et Tobago - Mer des Caraïbes
Barthélémy Fougéa, Jérôme-Cécil Auffret
1994 - 26 min - Betacam - Couleur - France

This film recounts the life of Donell, an 11 year old child who lives in Trinidad, in the Caribbean, and whose greatest dream is to become a "Panman" (the local name for steel-drum players).
The steel-drum is a recent musical instrument. Made with oil drums, it has been improved considerably in the last few years. Groups of over a hundred musicians, called "steel-bands", play calypsos (traditional Trinidadian music), jazz or classical music with brio.
Thanks to the story of this child and the musicians who surround him, the film-maker introduces us to a country, its folklore and its warm, exuberant population whose whole life is dominated by music.
