Known worldwide in the 60s thanks to Amalia Rodrigues, the fado was eclipsed after the Carnation revolution in 1974. There is rebirth today with young talent, from the beautiful Misia with such classic intonations to the more adventurous experiments of Madredeus or Paulo Bragança.
Born in Brazil, carried from one continent to the other by sailors, the fado has become the symbol of the Portuguese soul. It carries the nostalgia of an isolated people, forced by their geographical position to take to the sea. It remains a way to exorcise pain, to "sing" one's wounds with the inner voice that Misia seeks. Although the commercial fado of Madredeus is lit with softer tints, the fado of Paulo Bragança, born in Luanda in Angola, gives it a new load : that of a Portugal where nothing happens any more, "an orphan empire" with a great past. Evelyne Ragot carries out her investigation against a background of sea and sky, in the vestiges of splendour that still light up Lisbon in the early morning. Hélène Lee.
