In Afghanistan he was known as "Padar", which means "Father" but more a family term than a religious one. Today weary and tired after fifty years of travel and exile, Father Serge de Beaurecueil has withdrawn to a convent in Paris. At the age of 81, in his little room, he lives in meditative solitude. For him, his adventurous, religious life is summed up in one sentiment : "love for his adopted children" who lived in his private orphanage in Kabul. He had about thirty of them. They were not all from Kabul but from the four corners of Afghanistan, from different ethnic groups and with different languages. They "shared the bread and salt" under one roof, Father de Beaurecueil’s roof.
