Malarjez
Thierry Compain
2011 - 52 min - HDCam - Couleur - France

Every year Île Grande in Brittany sets the scene for Malarjez: the carnival.
What makes this ancient ritual persist to such an extent in today's society?
This film reveals the ins and outs of one of Brittany's smallest carnivals and helps us to understand what life and living together? mean in a village today; the unremitting need to preserve the islander's identity, the cultural necessities in a rural community and the choices that the young have to make; whether to stay or to leave to study and work elsewhere.
Malarjez takes a look at the universal issue of the separation from one's birthplace.
