Madagascar : l'insurrection de l'île rouge
Danièle Rousselier, Corinne Godeau
1994 - 55 min - Betacam SP - Couleur - France

On the 29 March 1947, groups of peasants armed with sticks and knives attacked the French garrisons in Madagascar. The revolt died out twenty months later with the death of the last rebels under fire from the hastily-assembled expeditionary force. The French, well-accustomed to collective lapses of memory, know nothing of this rebellion nor of the accompanying torture and deaths.
In Madagascar, long after independence, the events of 1947 are never mentioned. For over a generation, parents have refused to talk about it to their children. It was only in the 1980's that the silence was finally broken.
This film aims to testify to a forgotten massacre, which took place during a war of independance sadly akin to those in Vietnam and Algeria.
