Behind the Wall, the revival of nationalities and nationalism. Born of the Yugoslav explosion, the Republic of Macedonia has been independent since 1991, but its future is all the more uncertain, especially as today's risk of extension of the Yugoslav conflict is becoming more and more urging.
This film is first of all a trip along the frontiers which delimit the Macedonian territory. The three frontiers, between the Ex-Republic of Macedonia and the Yugoslav Federation, on one part, and between Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia on the other part, sum up by themselves the tragic history of Macedonia. Eternally contested, they are just like these old wounds, always ready to hurt again.
This film focuses on those who on all sides of these frontiers fought for the Macedonian dream. They have been or will actors or witnesses of the convulsive history of Balkans ; and they don't want to become victims of this stammering history.
