Through various periods of Laos’ tormented History, Luang-Prabang was the capital of what was once known “The Kingdom of the Million Elephants”.
Since the fall of the monarchy, the city has seemed asleep as if waiting for better days. In April, however, the Buddhist New Year is celebrated. This is when the Mekong goddesses awaken beautiful Luang-Prabang from its slumber.
Fifteen-year old Sililak is candidate to one of the most important contests of the city : that of the Mekong Goddesses. If elected, she will preside the New Year festivities.
For all Laotians, the Buddhist New Year constitutes a moment of great joy to be celebrated through a variety of festivities. For Sililak, being a "Mekong Goddess" is a turning point : after that she will leave adolescence to become a true Lao woman.
"Mekong Goddesses" unveils a rich and beautiful tradition of little known Laos. It reveals an engaging people still faithful to their ageless culture.
